چکیده

A miniature on-chip laser is an essential component of photonic integrated circuits for a plethora applications, including optical communication and quantum information processing. However, the contradicting requirements small footprint, robustness, single-mode operation, high output power have led to multi-decade search optimal design. During this search, topological phases matter—conceived initially in electronic materials condensed matter physics—were successfully extended photonics applied designs. Benefiting from protection, edge mode can emit more efficiently robustly than one emitting trivial bulk mode. In addition, operation over large range excitation energies be achieved by strategically manipulating modes cavity. Perspective, we discuss recent progress lasers outlook on future research directions.

Phase-modulating lasers toward on-chip integration

Controlling laser-beam patterns is indispensable in modern technology, where lasers are typically combined with phase-modulating elements such as diffractive optical elements or spatial light modulators. However, the combination of separate elements is not only a challenge for on-chip miniaturisation but also hinders their integration permitting the switchable control of individual modules. Her...

On-chip integrated lasers in Al2O3:Er on silicon

Erbium-doped aluminum oxide channel waveguides were fabricated on silicon substrates and their characteristics were investigated for Er concentrations ranging from 0.27 to 4.2 × 10 cm. Background losses below 0.3 dB/cm at 1320 nm were measured. For optimum Er concentrations in the range of 1 to 2 × 10 cm, internal net gain was obtained over a wavelength range of 80 nm (1500-1580 nm) and a peak ...

Self-pulsation in fiber-coupled, on-chip microcavity lasers.

We report self-pulsation in an erbium-doped silica toroidal microcavity laser coupled to a tapered fiber and investigate the effects of pump power and taper-cavity coupling condition on the dynamic behaviors of the pulse train. The microcavity is pumped at 1444.8 nm, and lasing occurs at 1560.2 nm with a threshold of 12 microW. Experimental results are interpreted within the framework of ion-pa...

Subwavelength semiconductor lasers for dense chip-scale integration

Metal-clad subwavelength lasers have recently become excellent candidates for light sources in densely packed chip-scale photonic circuits. In this review, we summarize recent research efforts in the theory, design, fabrication, and characterization of such lasers. We detail advancements of both the metallodielectric and the coaxial type lasers: for the metallo-dielectric type, we discuss opera...

Chip-based Brillouin lasers as spectral purifiers for photonic systems

High coherence lasers are essential in a wide range of applications, however, such performance is normally associated with large laser cavities, because increasing energy storage reduces quantum phase noise and also renders the laser frequency less sensitive to cavity vibration. This basic scaling rule is at odds with an emerging set of optical systems that place focus on compact (optimally int...
